Brown spots that weren’t there ten years ago, redness across your cheeks and nose, small red vessels around the nostrils — these make skin look older and blotchy, and makeup only hides them for a day. An IPL PhotoFacial in Springville, UT targets that color directly.

IPL stands for intense pulsed light. Unlike a single-wavelength laser, it uses a broad range of light that is absorbed by brown pigment and by the red in small blood vessels, breaking them down so your skin tone looks clearer.

When You Need an IPL PhotoFacial

IPL works well for sun spots and freckling on the face, neck, chest, arms and hands; diffuse redness and flushing; small broken capillaries; and overall uneven tone from sun damage. Treatment is planned around your skin type and recent sun exposure.

Because IPL lightens brown spots, every spot should be examined first. A dermatology provider can tell a harmless sun spot from one that needs a biopsy — something an IPL alone can’t do.

Many people in Utah County notice brown spots and redness on the backs of their hands and the sides of the face that sit toward the car window. IPL can treat those areas too, and treating the neck and chest along with the face helps the skin tone look even from top to bottom.

Our IPL PhotoFacial Process

At your consultation, your provider checks your skin type and the spots or redness you want treated, and makes sure there is no recent sun exposure. Protective eyewear is worn during treatment.

A cool gel is applied, and the handpiece delivers pulses of light across the area. Each pulse feels like a quick snap of a rubber band. A full-face session is usually well under an hour. Afterward, brown spots darken and look like coffee grounds before they flake off over a week or so. Redness may look a little more noticeable for a day or two.

Most people need a short series of treatments spaced several weeks apart for best results, with daily sunscreen to keep them.

After treatment, treat your skin gently for a few days. Use a mild cleanser and moisturizer, let the darkened spots flake off on their own, and avoid hot tubs, saunas and hard exercise for a day or two. Stay out of the sun and tanning beds, and use broad-spectrum sunscreen every day. Utah’s sun can bring brown spots back, so some people come back for occasional maintenance sessions.
